UMA Clearwater Students Participate in Mass Casualty Training Exercise
On Wednesday, May 22, more than 10 Patient Care Technician students from Ultimate Medical Academy’s Clearwater Campus participated in a mass casualty training exercise at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, Pinellas County’s only trauma center.
The students had casualty makeup applied by UMA Clearwater Campus Director Dr. Rebecca Sarlo and Laboratory Compliance/AHA Specialist Lori Aslin. They were also given cards that provided them with new names, ages, and scenarios describing how they obtained their mock injuries. This involved them portraying injured residents at a nursing facility that was knocked down by tornadoes that had passed through the region.
“What’s your injury?” one student asked.
“Girl, I got knocked down by a tree branch,” another responded.
Some students in the scenario had head injuries, were unable to walk, had altered mental states, or lacked a pulse.
As part of the drill, the students were assessed by Bayfront personnel and given a prognosis. Some were told that they would survive their injuries, while others were not as fortunate.
But despite the potentially life-threatening circumstances, the students had fun with the exercise.
“Are you going to live?” one student excitedly asked after a friend had been evaluated.
