INTRODUCTION

Stories of opioid abuse are an almost daily occurrence in Florida and the nation. In 2015, 52,404 Americans died as a result of drug abuse, or about 142 individuals every day. This makes opioid abuse a greater killer than automobile accidents or gun-inflicted homicides and suicides.∗ Florida has been referred to as “ground zero” for pill mills, making this a particularly serious issue for Pinellas County and our state.

PCMA recognizes the gravity of this issue and maintains this page as a source for up-to-date, reliable information on pain management and opioid abuse in Pinellas County.
