St. Petersburg General Hospital is presenting a variety of classes, support groups, and community seminars this month available to the public at no charge. 5/2: Stroke Support Club 3:00-4:00pm Northside Hospital – Medical Office Building – Suite 230 You are not alone! Each year, over 795,000 people in the United States will suffer the effects of a stroke. That’s why Northside Hospital & St. Petersburg General Hospital have partnered to offer a free monthly Stroke Support Group — to offer you advice and provide shared experiences so you can get back to the things you love.
5/4: Newborn Care Class 6:30-8:30pm St. Petersburg General Hospital – Auditorium Spend an enjoyable evening learning baby care basics. Topics covered include newborn characteristics, growth and development, infant safety, and the joys of parenting. No Fee – optional First Year Baby Care manual offered for $20
5/5: Breastfeeding Support Group 10:30-11:30am St. Petersburg General Hospital – Auditorium All pregnant women and women with babies are welcome to attend our breastfeeding support group. Topics will include: Breastfeeding benefits of the baby, techniques, education and helpful hints; networking with other breastfeeding moms and making new friends; ask questions to one of our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants; moms learn from one another and from community resources who periodically provide a short presentation for the group.
5/6: Preparing for Breastfeeding Class 12:30-3:30pm St. Petersburg General Hospital – Auditorium A one-time class focused on successful breast feeding. This course is devoted to Mom and her support person(s) to promote a positive breast feeding experience both in the hospital and after going home. This class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
5/8: Daddy 101 Class 6:30-7:30pm St. Petersburg General Hospital – Auditorium This class is for the men in the family. New to family life or want to sharpen your skills? This is the place for you! Taught by a veteran fire and EMS expert, learn everything from how to hold your infant, diapering, bathing and what to do in an emergency. This class is for the men in the family. 5/9: Urinary Incontinence? There is a Solution 1:00-2:00pm Brentwood Senior Living Do you still plan your day around restroom locations and skip social events so you won’t be embarrassed. 5/17: Breast Cancer Support Group 5:30-6:30pm St. Petersburg General Hospital – Breast Center You have found the right place for support, information and understanding. As an accredited cancer hospital, we are here to help before, during and after treatment. We will discuss clinical trials, surgery, lymphedema, lumps and cysts, genetics, side effects and much more.
5/18: Hernia: Get the Facts on Pains, Symptoms and Surgery 12:00-1:00pm Grand Villas Pinellas Park A hernia is a bulge of tissue and sometimes has symptoms like nausea and sudden extreme pain. The most common hernias are in the groin and in the abdominal area and affect more than 3 million people each year. 5/18: Obstetric OB and Delivery Preview Tour 6:30-8:00pm St. Petersburg General Hospital – Auditorium Learn about our obstetric services and meet our skilled nursing staff. See our beautiful Birthing Center—you will want to be sure to bring your support person(s) to tour with you!
5/24: What to Expect When You Call 911 12:00-1:00pm Madeira Beach Recreational Center Hopefully you’ll never need to call 9-1-1. However, if the time should ever come, knowing exactly what to do will reduce stress and help you provide emergency responders with vital information. Attend this informative seminar to learn more about what you need to know if you ever have to call.
5/27: Prepared Childbirth Class 10:00am-6:00pm St. Petersburg General Hospital – Auditorium This course covers the latest techniques to prepare you for your childbirth experience. Your instructor is a Lamaze certified RN, ICEA Certified and prepared with labor and delivery experience! This class content includes labor and delivery, relaxation and breathing, pain management, coping with unexpected events, and the immediate post-partum period. Wear comfortable clothes for floor exercise, please avoid dresses and skirts.
5/31: Opposable Thumbs – The Problem with Thumb-Based Arthritis 10:00am-6:00pm Sunshine Center Arthritis of the base of the thumb usually occurs after 40 years of age. Prior fractures or other injuries to the joint may increase the likelihood of developing this condition. Let Dr. Nguyen explain to you the causes and treatments of arthritis of the thumb.
